Export without saving (Windows Illustrator 2025)

Am I correct in thinking you cannot export without saving first? I saved and exported my illustrator file, uploaded the exported png to a google drive. Now two days later I am looking for the ai and png file and they are both gone. Missing from my recently opened and where I thought I saved it. Has this happened to anyone else? There was no error that popped up or anything. I presumed it was autosaving every two minutes like all my other files. I save over old files to update them but only the old one is there?

I have looked everywhere on onedrive and my computer for the file but it seems to be gone.

Hi alicia_6649,

Thank you for reaching out and reporting the export issue.

Yes, it is possible to export without saving the file first. However, your title and description seem a bit contradictory and slightly unclear. To better understand the issue, could you please confirm the following:

  • Did you save the Illustrator file before attempting to export it? If not, the content may not have been retained.
  • Was the file saved locally on your machine or elsewhere?
  • Please try to locate the files in your Google Drive.

Your clarification will help us assist you more effectively.

Thanks,

Harshika

  • I only have the png which was inserted onto a google drive word document

Apologies, I hope that makes things clearer.

Hello @alicia_6649,

Thanks for sharing the details. Files saved on OneDrive should be available here: (https://adobe.ly/4eqeV1i). If it is, try downloading the file locally and opening it in Illustrator to see if it helps.

Also, please note that while Illustrator supports working across networks, removable media, and cloud-synced folders (Google Drive / Dropbox / OneDrive, etc.), not all configurations, including different software, hardware, settings, and access rights, have been tested. Therefore, your configuration can cause errors, crashes, or unexpected behavior. You may learn more about this here: (https://adobe.ly/44l1tag).

To avoid such problems, we recommend working on your files from a local directory, like the Desktop, and manually copying them to the removable media, network drive, cloud-synced folder, or using Cloud Documents.

Feel free to reach out if you have more questions or need assistance. We'd be happy to help.
