Question

Exported SVG seems to have the wrong size, why?

Hello everyone,

I need to create this kind of notation in the Steinberg Dorico music notation software:

Screenshot 2026-02-04 alle 13.10.30

I have already worked on similar things in Dorico in the past so I proceeded like this:

  1. imported this single page from the PDF of the manuscript into Illustrator; locked the image into a separate “template” layer with 50% opacity and created a new layer above that to freely draw above it.
  2. added the notehead glyph from the publisher’s custom font. Created outlines from this glyph to prevent text editing.
  3. drew the line using the Curvature tool (Pen tool works just as well). Grouped the notehead and the line together and exported the result as an SVG. I’ve done this hundreds of times in the past successfully so I felt pretty confident to begin with.

From within Dorico, I created a new Playing Technique with this SVG as a Graphic. Upon placing it in the score and positioning at the correct rhythmic position I got this:

Screenshot 2026-02-03 alle 19.54.02

Clearly too small and too short.

Thinking of it as an issue with the size of the drawing I exported this page as a PDF from Dorico, placed it in Illustrator in another artboard (A3 size) and resized the SVGs to be of the correct size before exporting them again.

In Dorico, I deleted the previous playing technique and created a new one with the new SVG. Same result as above. Here are the two SVGs if you want to try things out:

SVGs.zip (3.3 KB)

I cannot share the original Dorico file, too many proprietary elements inside. You can use this mockup project to play with it. It should open fine in the free trial of Dorico in case you think you can help with that.

SVG Playing Techniques.dorico (472.0 KB)

Here is the Illustrator file if helpful:

(see .ai attachment below, the PDF of the music page should be embedded)

The SVGs seem to have a width of ~280 pts (~100mm) which appears to be correct for my needs. When placed in Dorico they look ~60% of the original size (= smaller).

If this cannot be made to work I can just draw things afterwards and place them in InDesign but the editor expressly asked me to do everything possible in Dorico. Since this used to be possible for me, I am failing to understand why this is not working now.

I hope you have all the elements and files to test, reproduce, and provide feedback.

If not, please shout out and I will promptly react!

Thank you so much!

    Hi Monika,

from reading the correct answer in the linked post I am confused.

They first say that “Responsive” unchecked is bad, then at the end they say that “Responsive” should be unchecked. What should I do? Check it or not?

In general, importing SVGs into music notation software has often yielded bad results when the SVG was exported as “Responsive”.

Is there any way to draw something in Illustrator and export it in SVG so that it just imports in other apps as it is? That is, something reliable!

    Thanks!

You have to fight with 2 things: one is that Illustrator doesn’t translate your size well into SVG (or at all). The other is an unknown: how does your software interpret the size in the SVG. Basically until someone is using the same software as you do, you have to figure it out.

You could open the SVG in a text editor and enter the unit and size into it if you know how it needs to be formatted. Or you could figure out the factor by which the size is off in your music software and just make it bigger or smaller in Illustrator and then export it.
