Exporting as jpeg with use artboards adds to file name

When I export from Illustrator CS5 with "Use Artboards" checked it adds a "-01" to the end of my file name before the extention. I'm assuming that its because its artboard #1 or something. It happens with the all or the range button checked. It doesnt show the -01 when you are saving the file name. This is pretty annoying because I have to go back and re name the files when this happens. Any advice? Thanks!

There has been a lengthy discussion going on here for a while from both sides, but mainly from people whose workflow has been negatively impacted by the change, so Adobe changed it back. Meanwhile they're supposedly going to be thinking of ways to satisfy both sides.

Agreed. Workflow is irrelevant. Regardless of how or why files need to be created for any given environment, the end of the road is that Illustrator exports (when "use artboard" is checked) an appended file name that becomes absolutely useless in many dynamic environments.

My case? We are batch exporting hundreds of icon AI files to feed a database-driven application. As it stands, we may have to now delete this chaotic little "-1" that we aren't even using within the AI working file. I could understand if this was automatically generated upon export when using multiple artboards in one working file, but when you only use the one default artboard, then what good is it to append the file name with meta data that is of no use? Even it was useful in some cases, clearly it is a hindrance in many other cases.

Our option is to use third-party batch file naming scripts or to write our own batch files. I was surprised and quite honestly disappointed in Adobe that this issue has been represented for so many years in this thread alone.

extremely annoying. Adobes naming process when exporting artboards also cause me a lot of extra work.

    I found this tool: http://www.tbyrne.org/export-illustrator-layers-to-svg-files/comment-page-1

Export Illustrator Layers to SVG files | Thomas Byrne

there is also a updated version for salein exchange:

It's not 100% perfect, but it's a big step in the right direction! Adobe should give this guy a job!

Hello, the program do it because the file can have many pages. I use de resource "annoying" renamed the Artboards whit something that I need in the file name JPEG and no write that it in the name on hour of save.

Other option is use the save for web. I use export from Illustrator only if I export many pages or CMYK files.

Adobe come on! What is the issue with providing a fix? It's a hugely annoying part of my workflow every day to have to manually rename your stupidly appended filenames... I want to overwrite a file if I choose, you don't need to know the reason, you don't need to append any automatic numbering system or anything else. Super annoying and can't believe it's been years with absolutely no response from Adobe... lame.

Same issue, all I want to do is Replace an existing file with a PNG export.  Have a check box for people that want to keep the art board addition to the file name.

Illustrator CC 2015.3 "Export for Devices" option in File > Export menu provides finer control for exported file names. It allows option to add pre-fix, suffix and not to include any of them.

Hi, Just searching on the same issue. I second the motion for a fix! It simply adds wasted time and we all know how valuable that is in your workflow.

    Hello

Has this been changed yet? This entire process is bothersome.

As far as I know... no it has not.

In illustrator I just named my artboards what I need the file names to be "icon52" "icon64" "icon128" etc.

And then I do Export. And do all artboards with name of an underscore "_" so the names are:

    _icon52

    _icon64

    _icon128

    etc.

Then I rename the first file "_icon52" by removing the underscore to "icon52" and PRESS TAB so the next file's name becomes editable without having to double click it. It's a dumb workaround but it works and takes seconds to get the right names.

I also came for a solution...

Sometimes to avoid the -01 (if I'm only using 1 art-board per file), I use Photoshop...File > Scripts > Image Processor... this will save everything in the folder you have selected to JPG format...Unfortunately when I use this method, it doesn't recognize the art-board and crops it to the edges of my work.

This -01 issue needs to be solved...it is completely unnecessary.

(separate issue, but if anyone knows how to get Photoshop to recognize the art-board when saving in this method, then my method is extremely better than deleting -01....)

I came here in hopes of a solution as well

I work with many artboards within my files. So for example when working on mobile apps I need a bunch of different sized icons 50x50 60x60 124x124 etc. They way I handle this is I have 1 illustrator file with 15 or so artboards. Each artboard is named with a specific name that the server accepts (with the name is different it will produce an error).

When it's time to export I only put in a "_" underscore in the name so all the names end up as __icon60 or __icon512 at the end i just rename each icon one at a time and remove the double underscore __

Not the ideal solution but it only takes 10-20 seconds per app to rename the icons.

So it's April 2015. Has Adobe pulled its finger out and done anything about this stupid "interfere with your file names" feature that nobody likes?  It is driving me up the wall with frustration!  Incidentally, has Illustrator got a proper Arc tool that can draw the arc that the USER ACTUALLY WANTS, rather than the ridiculous 90 degree arc every time?

I have to ask because I am on CS6, and since I will never upgrade to Adobe's nasty CashCow rental scheme I will never find out if they bothered making any worthwhile changes in Illustrator CC (I very much doubt it).

Has this been fixed or has anyone found a work around?

This is extremely tedious.  I have a file that I export high res jpegs from, MUST use the artboard (to keep from the stuff off the artboard making the jpegs the wrong size) and use those jpegs to make notes on (in another Illustrator or IndDesign file).

I should be able to save over the old file, which would automatically update as a linked file in my notes.  But no, I have to manually delete old file and re-import to the notes!

    Huge waste of time.

Does anyone at Adobe Actually look at this board?

Clearly this is a big annoyance, with a very small fix for a big company.

    So lame.

Obviously beyond the competence of Adobe (as Steve Jobs suggested, "they are too lazy").
I have been using Name Mangler 3 and found it to be the best solution for this irritating problem
