Exporting design with transparent areas to PNG creates black box

Whenever I try to export a black design with transparent areas to PNG, the produced PNG is solid black. This doesn't happen with PDF or SVG, just PNG... help, please!

    Which application do you use to view the PNG?

    Photoshop, Preview (Mac), Photos, Word... programs that open other PNG files just fine.

    Does the artwork have any clipping masks or possibly any other live effects added to it? If I have to export graphical elements from Illustrator in PNG format I'll usually use the File>Export>Export As command. Choose the PNG format, uncheck the "Use Arboards" option, choose the desired resolution and choose "transparent" for the background.

    Works fine for me.

    What Illustrator version? Do you use export for screens? What are your png settings?

    Did you restart your machine, reset preferences?
