Question

Exporting overprint separately?

I received a book jacket from a Japanese client where we've had to reformat it for it to be in English, and there's a 5th color applied as an overprint, but I'd like to export it separately off of the jacket. How do I go about doing this? I've been trying to read into it, and people seem to have a hard enough time exporting with an overprint, let alone exporting it separately from the CYMK

I essentially want 2 files:
1. the CYMK version
2. the overprint 5th color

    Hi bekreider,

The files can be exported in PDF , this will serve both the purpose of preserving as well as discarding overprint.

    • For exporting with Overprint 5th Colour - Save the file in PDF format ,  you will get a  ' Save Adobe PDF'  dialogue box on proceeding.

Select PDF version other than PDF 1.3  from Compatibility dropdown and click on save.

    • For Discarding -  Save the file in PDF format ,  you will get a  ' Save Adobe PDF'  dialogue box on proceeding. Select PDF 1.3 from Compatibility dropdown  and  select  'PDF/X-1a:2001' from standard dropdown. Go to Advanced and select 'Discard' from Overprint Dropdown for discarding the overprint .

I hope this solves your problem.

I am also working on this file. Here is a side by side screenshot of an area where it is most affected.

Here is a screenshot of the cover when the overprint view option is turned off. This is how it appears when it is exported. in any format.

Here it is with the overprint view option turned on. As you can see, it is a completely different color and the brightness of the pink is affected.

Here is a view of the appearance panel. We attempted to create an overlay effect by using just the overprint pink color on one image, and the base fill on another. When overlaid it still doesn't look right.

Here are the differences in the pink color of the overprint fill when the overprint view is on Vs. off:

    On:

    Off:

We need an export of how the file looks with the overprint turned on. Simulating overprint as a post script file and as a simulated overprint in Indesign doesn't work.

    Any help is appreciated, thanks!

So the problem is really only the export for the digital version?

How is the image to be included in that e-book? As a vector image?

I would probably export this as a raster image and convert it to RGB when exporting. For presentation on the screen it will need to be an RGB image anyway.

Unfortunately, the rasterized image exported in RGB looks like this too:

Our uploader usually upsizes a PDF and encodes it for digital viewing, and it is fed into our ebook system. If he had to deal with a rasterized image he could.

I was wondering why you want it in 2 files?

We are translating this book into English and all English copies get a digital version available to them online - however we haven't been able to figure out a way to export it digitally (PDF, etc) without missing a ton of color information from the overprint.

Typically we receive 2 files, one as a CYMK file, and the other as a single color file to apply on top of it (which you can just place the layer on top, select the Pantone color you need, and hit multiply). We figured separating the overprint in this book would allow us to do that.

We've tried a lot of different ways of exporting the file and just none of them have exported the file nearly as nice as it would in print and we're not sure what our options are. This is the first time a publishing company in Japan has given us a file like this.

It's really impossible to give any advice without seeing the file.

Nobody here can read your mind or see what's on your computer.

Maybe you don't want to post a file in public forum. In that case you will have to hire someone who can fix this for you.

    Duplicate the artboard.

    Delete everything you don't need.

That wouldn't work because there are no layers for the overprint. If that were the case this would be a pretty easy solution.

Well. Without knowing your file how should we then help you?
