Feature request: pathfinder operates on embedded graphics

It would be nice if I could embed a jpeg or some other graphic format and then be able to use the pathfinder tools to change the shape of the image. Seems doable as the graphic imports as a path that happens to be filled with pixels rather than a color or pattern.

JPEGs are pixel images, not paths filles with pixels.

You can use a clipping mask.

The problem with clipping masks is that when you are using them liberally, the structure of the file becomes rather confusing when viewed in wireframe mode. We are working on complex packaging designs with many elements and I'd prefer have those areas of the bitmap removed to keep the structure of the file simple rather than to be full of many paths that don't function as strokes or fills.

In that case you might want to use an image editing application.

Of course you can also inside Illustrator apply a clipping mask first and then use Object > Rasterize. But I doubt that you will ever get the superior results of an image editing software with that.
