File name disappears after entering a space while typing during saving - Illustrator on macOS

Recently, when I go to save a new file and write the file name the entire text will disappear after I enter a space into the file name. For example: if I want to write “3.27.2026_file name here” everything will disappear once I hit space after “file”. I can get around this by not entering any spaces, but it’s not an ideal workaround and more importantly just doesn’t seem to make any sense as to why it started happening.

Can confirm that it happens on multiple Adobe programs; both Illustrator and Indesign have this issue when I go to save a new file. It seems to have started after a recent Mac update, but I only experience this issue when saving in Adobe programs.

This is a Mac bug, not an Adobe bug.

Note that if you have the extensions displaying in the save dialogue (.jpg at the end) then this won’t happen, it’ll save as normal. You can manually type the extension in your dialogue box and then go back and fill out the name if you need to work around this.

After some additional tests, I discovered that it’s not always true. It can happen even when extensions are enabled. And after the problem happens, the “Hide Extension” option becomes checked even if it was unchecked before. Also, this seems to be fixed in macOS 26.5 (now in beta).

This happened to me starting last week. Every single file I export or save wipes away the file name once I type it in and hit enter. I’ve tried no periods, no space, etc and it’s rejecting everything except just letters which is a big problem. I’m on MAC Tahoe 26.4 and it doesn’t look like there is another update yet. Need a fix asap.

@susanMG22 Does it happen in Illustrator only or in other apps too (Adobe or otherwise)? There are conflicting reports from users who are affected by this issue, while most users don’t seem to be affected.

This happens in Excel, Word, Powerpoint or saving as a PDF of almost anything. It is extremely frustrating. And it started “out of nowhere”. This has to be a bug. I’m hoping someone can fix it. No time to go back in, change the name of all the files I’m working with as I need to save and move on. Working at very fast speed. This is much more than an inconvenience.

Yes, same issue. Naming conventions required by work are failing only after the last OS update.

Apple’s TextEdit is fine. PhotoShop and Illustrator is fine (today) but I swear it did not allow the period (or spaces) in the file name last week when I looked for this issue. Today it’s just InDesign that fails.
I’ll go through a few other apps and check them this week.
I can also rename the files with periods and spaces in Finder and the files are saved properly, and open properly in InDesign.

Experiencing the same issue in Acrobat (Build: 26.1.21346.0) / OS 26.4. Super aggravating.

Adding that PDFs I edit/save-as in Mac Preview do not exhibit this issue.

The same just started happening to me about 2 days ago. Before then, I had no problems exporting InDesign files with the naming convention my work requires. I try to type “36. Mr. Wilson” or something similar with the number, a period, and then a space before the file name, and as soon as I hit space after the period, it erases the whole file name. I just had a remote session with an Adobe tech and they couldn’t figure out why it happened. Their solution was a workaround of using no periods in the filename. Sadly, I need to use the period for the work I do, but until this can be resolved, I guess the only option is the workaround.

And in case it helps, I just updated to Tahoe recently too.

Does it happen in other Adobe apps - for example, Illustrator — and does it happen when you rename files in the Finder?

Let me know if you find a fix. What Mac do you have?

Is it happening in Finder for you?

    Hi @Kathie280217711abo & @Mihaly Slo

Thank you for reaching out. In addition to what our expert has asked,  I am also unable to reproduce the issue on my end. Would you mind sharing a recording of the workflow for investigation? Please also share the version of Illustrator installed on your machine.

Have you noticed the issue happening after updating the macOS?
Does that happen with all files?

We will try our best to help you.

    Thanks,

    Harshika

I actually am experiencing the same issue. After doing a remote session with an Adobe tech, their only solution was to include no periods at all in the name. It worked fine before updating to Tahoe 26.4 a few days ago, so it does seem to be connected to that. I know the files are not corrupted, since when I create a brand new file and include a period followed by a space (per my work’s file naming convention) I have the same problem. If I open another file and edit the name to add a period followed by space, it starts having the same problem. In the attached video, I show trying to add “_1-Sided” at the end of the file name, but it just erases the file name.

Have this exact same issue on a Macbook 2021 running Tahoe, only started happening since that update. Everytime I put in a . and hit space it clears the name.

Just a guess do you have any text replacement macros active on your MAC. Such issues happen to me sometimes and they always trace back to such automations

I can’t reproduce it on Tahoe. What’s your macOS version?
