File > new is not working any longer in illustrator

Hi, my illustrator opens with a black screen. I can open files etc, but I cannot create a new file with File >New. It is unresponsive when I used a mouse, and also unresponsive with the keyboard command Ctrl +N. Is it a bug, how to fix it? Your help is greatly appreciated. See below image of my start up screen, seems like somethings wrong.

Correct answer Ray Yorkshire

Maybe try selecting:

  Edit >Preferences > General

Use legacy 'file new' interface

Had the same issue. But my opening screen showed the recent files and had a "Create new" button that didn't work either.Worked. But this still feels like a bug.

The preferences change worked for me as well—but this still feels like a bug.

If the above does not work, try reseting Preferences: How to set preferences in Illustrator

Try clicking on the Workspace popup menu (upper right of your window) and choose Reset Start (near the bottom of the popup menu). (see screenshot)

Hi Jeff, thanks for your reply. I did reset Start as well, it did nothing...  I am thinking my software has gotten corrupted somehow. Reintalling it didnn't work either.

I even uninstalled and reinstalled illustrator. Still the same issue.
