Adobe is always working on new versions of applications such as Illustrator. New features get added, other things get improved, the application takes advantage of improving computer hardware standards, etc. This is the nature of all computer applications. The only way a company releases a "final version" of an application is if or when development ends for that application. Those events happen from a software developer going out of business or getting bought out by a competing company. Around 20 years ago the final version of Macromedia Freehand was released (version MX); Adobe bought Macromedia and continued development on some apps, such as Dreamweaver, but they ended development on Freehand since it was a rival to Illustrator.

They didn't.

FreeHand was already terminated before Adobe bought Macromedia.

It's an interesting blog post. It was also written nearly 2 years after Adobe first announced it was going to acquire Macromedia. Initially Adobe stated they would continue development on Freehand. They even released a re-branded/re-packaged version of Freehand MX as "Adobe Freehand." But then came the official announcement in May of 2007 they were not going to do any more updates or development on the application. I was more annoyed by Adobe's decision to remove file import support of the Freehand format from Adobe Illustrator with version CS6 and later.

Macromedia certainly put Freehand into a comatose state, treating it almost as bad at the end as they did with Fontographer. FontLab Ltd has released the only real updates to Fontographer since Altsys was developing it in the early 1990's. And FontLab already had their own namesake pro-level font creation application.
