Question

Font changing while typing latin characters (but the font does have latin characters)

Hi guys, I have a problem with Illustrator versions 27.6.1 and 27.7, possibly in earlier versions as well, but I haven't downgraded to a version prior to 27.6.1. The problem is as follows: Every time I'm typing with any font, even those activated from Adobe, when I type a Spanish accent mark like á, é, etc., the typography changes to Myriad Pro. This is common when the font doesn't contain Latin characters, but in this case, the font does have them, and if I reassign the same font to the text, it displays properly.

I have tried downgrading to a previous version, hoping that the issue would not be present in 27.6.1, but it still persists. I have already uninstalled, deleted preferences, and restarted my workstation. My computer is a Mac Pro 6.1 with a 3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5 processor, 16GB of RAM, and macOS Monterrey 12.6.7.

It stops switching to Myriad when you uncheck: Preferences > Type > Enable Missing Glyph Protection.

Good to know!

Okay.. it may be a font glyph. I can reproduce the issue in a bunch of apps on my Mac, including Word and even the Simple Text app (although it defaults to other fonts instead of Myriad). As far as Adobe apps, it also happens in Photoshop, but weirdly, InDesign sorts itself out but not before throwing this when typing the "option-e" portion of the key combo:

So that led me to inspect the glyphs in fonts that didn't work and those that did. In the following grab, the top font Allotrop is missing the acute accent and umlaut glyphs, whereas Proxima below has them and works fine. It seems these glyphs are necessary when you type a Mac accented character key combo, even though they will be replaced with the actual combo glyph. And, being missing, the programs replace it with their respective default font.

I can't seem to reproduce the issue on a Windows PC. Perhaps I'm not entering the accented characters the same way. I usually type them using Alt codes, such as holding down the Alt key and typing "0225" on the number pad to get the "á" character. I either do that or click on the character in the glyphs palette. I've tested it with a couple different typefaces, including Allotrope Variable.

Yes, it works from glyphs and alt codes, but it slows the workflow a lot. The way we type latin characters is on two keystrokes: firs the one indicating theres an accent or tilde, and then the vowel, thats because we have a lot of words that uses these characters. I hope it gets corrected. For now i'm typing all the text and give format afterwards.
Thanks.

Well, it looks like the Windows version of Illustrator is affected too. If I simply type the ` key into a text string the ` character and anything after it is styled in default Myriad Pro. Edit: that happens when using the Allotrope typeface. It doesn't do that when trying out some other fonts.

Yes that looks like a bug in the recent versions. Works as it should in 2022 (26.5.3).

You may want to report it here:

Not for me. I was able to reproduce the issue with Allotrope in all versions I have installed CC2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. It is font-specific, though. Other fonts worked, some didn't

Hi Brad, I have the same problem with every font, even with some that i've been using for years, for me it's not specific for Allotrope, but is interesting that you get the bug only on that one. I'll deactivate it and give it a try with some others. Thanks.

I can reproduce that.
