Free Distort options

For free hand distortion, am I right in thinking our only option is still Effect > Distort & Transfor > Free Distort? Is it possible to control this effect outside of it's dialogue box? I'd like to be able to control it in the main window / artboard, the way you would Edit > Transform in Photoshop, I need to do some acurate distortions and the small dialogue box and controls make it almost impossible.

Also, looking at achieving similar results with the new Effect > 3D and Materials > Extrude and Bevel, but it doesn't appear to have the option for perspective that the classic version did. Am I missing something here?

Any insight or options would be appreciated.

Using Illustrator 26.0 (64bit)

Take a look at the Free Transform tool in the Tools palette.

The classic 3D effects are still there and you can use them (see Effect menu).

Excellent stuff, thank you. I figured there would be a more current solution.
