The freeform gradient is visible when saved as ai but not visible in pdf format. I have tried changing all the gradient colours to process colours instead of spot colors but still no luck.

A non-destructive solution is to use the Rasterize Effect in the Illustrator section of the Effects menu. This will create a rasterized version that will retain the ability to edit the points. If you need to make a lot of changes I'd suggest disabling the Rasterize effect temporarily so it doesn't need to keep re-rasterizing the gradient.

Note that this effect is not the same as the Rasterize item found in the Object menu, which is destructive.

Which OS version? There were reports about Mac Preview  in recent systems not showing freeform gradients.

Rasterize them and using a clipping mask would be a workaround for those apps.

razterizing will be destructive to me design. Any other ideas apart from that?

Rasterizing will make it an image. When rasterizing a freeform gradient at a sufficient resolution you will get a good result. Keep the original for editing.

Other than that, don't use Preview and complain to Apple.

What software are you using to view the PDF? Does it appear if you use Acrobat?
