freeze crash Not Responding Illustrator on vector PDF

Hello,

In Illustrator, I have vector files with overlapping layers and many colors.
Originally, these files come from a PDF exported from an imposition software used in a printing workflow, containing multiple combined files.

For some of them, I can’t open the files at all, and for others, saving is very slow or doesn’t work—the software becomes unresponsive.
The CPU and computer memory are not saturated at all.

Here is my configuration:
CPU: i7-14700K
RAM: 64 GB
GPU: NVIDIA RTX A2000 128 GB

Does anyone have a solution? Illustrator preferences, computer settings?
Thank you for your feedback.

PDF files are generally not edit-friendly. A PDF file that was generated by an imposition application might be meant solely for print output, not further editing. Such files can contain a daunting amount of clipping masks, clipping groups, duplicate objects that are not filled/painted and all sorts of other problems.

Adobe Illustrator can save PDF files that are edit-friendly (when certain settings are applied), but that's because Illustrator data is being appended to the PDF file.

Astute Graphics' Vector First Aid plugin for Illustrator is pretty good, but not perfect, at cleaning up a lot of problems in PDF files. If you're not already using Astute Graphics' suite of plugins you can download a free trial.

Hello,
Thank you for your reply. I will try using the plug‑in. I was looking for a solution that would still allow me to make modifications to my PDF files while ensuring that the computer can handle the workload.
Thank you for your feedback.

Hello @Brandstatter32729187vp4z,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Could you confirm the version of Illustrator installed, if this happens with specific files or files stored in a particular folder location (internal/external/network drive or a cloud-synced folder like Dropbox/Google Drive/etc) and if this started happening after a recent software/hardware change, so we can better assist you?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello,

I am working with Adobe Illustrator version 29.8.3.

I have run tests with my files saved locally on my hard drive as well as on our server, and it does not change anything regarding the issue.

I have always experienced this problem, but the file I tested this time is even more complex than usual, which makes the issue more noticeable.
Thank you for your feedback.
