Getting alert "File has been edited outside of Illustrator" on Illustrator 2020

I am thinking this is just a weird bug with the new 2020 update.

My co-worker went to edit a file I originally created in Illustrator 2020. My whole team has updated their programs with the most recent update so we are all on the same one. When she opened the file a message window opened stating "This file has been edited outside of illustrator...." when it couldnt have been. I was the only one who ever opened it and worked on it until she had to cover for me. It outlined some text, all the different layers created within the file were merged together onto one. Basically making me have to re-create the whole file for a reason we cannot answer.

We do use the Variable Data Merge function with almost everything we create so this has basically killed the file setup for data merging anything.

If anyone has had this problem and knows how to fix it that would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problem since I updated to Mojave 10.14.6, using Illustrator 24. I save to my local harddrive, and no one else has access to my files. It happened a few minutes ago when I was working on a file and saved several versions so I  would have them to refer back to changes.

What happened is not that it merged something, but the file got corrupted. What you have there is the PDF part of the file. Illustrator could not save the file correctly.

You need to sort this out in your network. The safe way to deal with networks would be to save on the local harddisk and then move the file to the network.

Hi Amanda,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing with Illustrator. I would request if you can share a few more details like:

  1. The version of the Operating System.
  2. Is the issue related to a specific document?
  3. Where is the file saved(Network Drive/ System Hard Drive/ Shared Folder on System /External Hard Drive)?
  4. If it is not saved locally, could you please try to turn off the synch for the shared folder or shared drive where the file has been saved and then check again.

Regards

We all run off Windows 10

Havent had issues related to this recently or in the past.

We save everything on a server.

If it is because of saving on the server is this something my team and i should bring up with the IT department?

Saving on a server can definitely do harm to your file and can cause this issue.

Since text is outlined: is there anything else? Clipping masks that you didn't create?

My first guess would be that the file was saved on a external server and there is a problem with the connection. AI doesn't really work well with servers.
