Question

Google and Windows 10 System fonts don't show up in Illustrator

I had this issue in the past. System fonts not showing up in Illustrator. I just migrated to a brand new machine and most of my Google Fonts installed on Windows 10 do not show up in Illustrator. Some of them that do show up, have display issues.

I just contacted Adobe support, but they cannot provide support (so they say) as these fonts are "third-party" fonts and they are "unable to provide the troubleshooting". They asked me to contact Google directly. Since all these fonts show up in every other Windows 10 app I have installed on my system, this is clearly an Adobe issue.

I prefer using my (non-cloud) system fonts, as I had three instances in the past, where Adobe just randomly dropped fonts from the cloud (licensing issues with thrid party font providers?) and my documents were left with a missing font. This system is too unrealiable for me, so I prefer to keep fonts on my local machine.

Another issue that I have: some fonts that do show up in the list suddenly and quite randomly suddenly disappear from my canvas or when I export.

Can someone please help me, clarify the situation or offer some troubleshooting assistant that Adobe is denying me?

Any help appreciated!

Hi there,

We're really sorry for this frustrating experience. This is not the experience we want you to have. I'll be happy to assist you. I would request you to share a few more details like:

  • OS and version of Illustrator
  • List of fonts names that are not showing up in Illustrator.
  • Are these OTF or TTF?
  • Are you using any Font manager application?
  • Does resetting Illustrator Preferences ( https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/setting-preferences.html) help to resolve the issue?
Disclaimer: Please note that resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings, and Illustrator will launch with default settings. You can also take a backup of the folders in case you want to. Location is mentioned in the article.

Also, try running the app in Safe Mode & Hidden Admin Account and let us know how it goes.

We are here to help. We just need more information.

Thanks & Regards,

Hi Anshul!

Thank you for your quick response. I just went through all font releated documents. What I read: Google Fonts are also offered on Font Adobe. I think some of them at least. So when you install a google font on windows 10 directly and do not activate that same font on Font Adobe, this can probably lead to issues. I activated all google fonts that I need to use and will test to see if it now works. Not sure why the Adobe support person asked me to go to Google for support, when these fonts are actually made available through the Adobe platform?? All the Adobe Support people need to do is  mentioned that we also need to activate some of the Google Fonts on Font Adobe. I did specify the fonts exactly.  Anyway, I am one step closer to solving my issues. I am still concerened about the rendering issues. As today during an Illustrator session, the font on my canvas disappeared when resizing. Also when exporting, the page was blank. I will check all my fonts in the next days and if somehting comes up, I will post here. Thanks again for your quick reply. But for now I am good to go.

No, this has nothing to do ewith it. Quite the contrary: when you install a font directly and then also activate the same font on Adobe Fonts, you might have additional issues, because there are 2 fonts with the same name installed.

Check the fonts.

And then also if you have a font manager running: fix issues with it as well.

It will also help if you tell us precisely which font does not work.

And then there is also this: on WIndows fonts need to be installed "For all users" in order to run in Illustrator.
