Gradient angle / live paint selection tool

I use this feature fairly often but am not sure when this problem may have crept in (upgraded to 23.0.1 from 23.0 today) - but I am no longer able to change the angle of a gradient with the mouse in a live paint selection (selected with the live paint selection tool). I can still change the angle as usual in a non-live-paint shape - the problem is only with live paint objects. Anyone else experiencing this?

This seems to be a bug as it works fine in CC2018. It has been reported twice on Uservoice but doesn't seem to be getting much traction. Please vote for one or both:

Have you tried going into isolation mode? Can you adjust it in there?

Thanks for the suggestion. That no longer works either - I can only adjust it along the horizontal and vertical axes, and the gradient is reduced to a hard break between two colors.
