Gradient background all the way

I want to use transparent text over gradient background. I have used pathfinder minus font on the same layer, but the gradiant is still inside the.text. how can I get transparent background all the way behind

Morten,

As I (mis)understand it, you may (from the bottom up):

1) Create the background path (the rectangle in your image) and give it the desired gradient,

2) Create the text (just black), you may keep it as live Type, or you may outline it and have it grouped,

3) Select both text and background path and in the Transparency (flyout) click (Make) Opacity Mask with Clip and Invert Mask ticked/unticked to obtain the desired appearance, you may try all the four combinations, you will know what I mean when you do if no sooner.

If i understand correctly

Draw a rectangle behind the text, apply a gradient to that ,

Select the text and the rectangle

Object > Clipping Mask > Make

I dont want the gradiant inside the letters, but behind the letter . If you look at the letter A you can se that the gradiant also starts there.(in the background) I dont want it to be several garadiants behind the letters , just one. Do you know how to make that?
