Gradient color on text

Im not sure it this is the place to go for featcher requests but one that I would love to see is color gradient being added to live text. it is soo difficult to have to outline the text and create a compound shape just to add a gradient, and then have to undo everything because the client wants the wording changed. or redoing it when you forgot what the font was from an old document... I would like it all nativly, without plugins, if there even are plugins for this.

You can:

1: Use the Pathfinder panel to make a compound shape from live text (no need to outline it first), then apply the gradient

2: apply a new fill to the text object using the Appearance panel (Window > Appearance) and then apply a gradient to that (again no need to outline the text)
