Question

gray vector image prints with many dots, not uniform.

I am trying to print a product label with my monochromatic laser printer (Brother). The black text is fine, but I have a gray logo that I made in illustrator that looks good on screen, but when it prints, it is comprised of many tiny dots instead of being a uniform shade of gray. I have been trying to figure out the answer all day and have read about post script printers, (which I do not have) and halftones (which I think is what the many dots are). I'm a novice here. I contacted Brother customer service and was told that my printer is capable of a uniform gray and that it all depends on the settings I choose in my adobe program when I print.

I have tried many different settings, as well as tried various settings from acrobat. Can anyone help  troubleshoot this issue? I really need a uniform gray, as the dots look unprofessional and I prefer not to outsource printing when it is only black and white (and gray!)

I am using the 2017 release of Illustrator. I also have access to the entire creative suite, if there is a better program to print from I am open to all suggestions.

Thank you!

You're correct, this is a halftone.

A raster is the only option for your printer, since it has only black as a color. What you need to find out is, if it's possible to get a much finer rasterization. Or maybe the printer can use a frequency modulated raster instead of the amplitude modulated one. This shows the difference (for color images) Druckraster – Wikipedia

Unfortunately I can find no information about changing the rasterization. I tried looking in the driver settings for it too. I suppose I should contact Brother print support again. Thank you for confirming the halftone, I will be able to communicate the issue better knowing that.
