Halftone 3D wave

Hey guys,

I am trying to create this kind of wave patterns but I cannot find out to have the halftone effect reacting this way. Any ideas?

Like Mike I used a mesh to distort the halftone dots:

I applied a (gradient) fill, a Rasterize Effect > Grayscale 150ppi, and the Color Halftone Effect.

Then; Object Envelope Distort > Make with Mesh and moved the mesh points.

You can still edit everything by switching between Object > Envelope Distort > Edit Contents or Envelope.

Use gradient mesh and color halftone effect.

You may want to live trace and warp distort more afterwards to get uneven size dots.
