why am I having such a hard time selecting objects that are not even overlapping?

I have to click on it all a couple of times until I get to it...

You might be facing a few issues. Try these solutions:

  1. Z-Index Layering: Check the layer panel to ensure you're selecting the right object.
  2. Snap to Grid/Alignment: Disable snap-to-grid or adjust alignment to avoid overlap.
  3. Transparency or Opacity: Ensure objects aren't too transparent to select easily.
  4. Mouse Sensitivity: Adjust mouse sensitivity if it's making selection difficult.
  5. Selection Tool Settings: Verify you're using the correct selection tool and settings.
  6. Zoom In: Zoom in to reduce the clustering of objects when selecting.

Can you perhaps show a screenshot?

And tell us more about your device? Is it a mouse, a tablet, trackpad ...?
