What model macintosh do you have? High Sierra is compatible with the following Macs:

    MacBook (Late 2009 or newer)

MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)

MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)

Mac mini (Mid 2010 or newer)

    iMac (Late 2009 or newer)

Mac Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)

If your Mac is an earlier model than one of those listed then that could be the problem. Also, in my experience, even if you do fit into the criteria listed, I've seen that the older the Mac the slower it runs with a newer OS.

One other thought. Are you on a network? If so, check with your network administrator to see if the network software has been updated to run correctly with High Sierra. Many times networks are not updated to accommodate virus protection and firewalls.
