HELP ME PLEASE - Illustrator won't let me right-click on layers

I am having the most annoying issue of my life.

When using Illustrator the right click does not work when hovering over layers or items in the layer tab. I have tried:

- resetting preferences

- uninstalling illustrator and re-installing

- swapping from application bar to frame vice versa.

-updating softwares including IOS

I also have tried disconnecting monitors and doing it on the desktop solo, same problem.

Nothing works.... I feel handicapped and super close to going back to Affinity where none of these problems happened... How can such an expensive piece of software have such a stupid bug... SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!

Specs:

Adobe Illustrator CC 2025 29.6

Mac OS Sequoia 15.5

Based on some of the items you listed it sounds like you might be describing right click options on layers in Photoshop. You can right click on layers and get options like "Flatten Image," "Duplicate Layer," "Merge Layers," etc. The Layers panel in Illustrator has some noticeably different behaviors.

In Illustrator there are no layer options required to create clipping masks. Just position an object intended to be the mask over the objects you want contained in that mask. Go to the "Object" drop-down menu, select "Clipping Mask" and "Make" from the flyout menu. Or just press the Ctrl+7 keyboard shortcut.

I can't right click on Illustrator all of a sudden. I'm just trying to right click on a layer so I can choose flatten image to then export the .ai file to a .jpg. I have tried quitting and reopening illustrator, restarting my computer, and no layers are locked. I also tried turning off GPU performance on the illustrator preferences. I also went to my computer settings and made sure my secondary click option is on. My computer is a Mac and illustrator is updated to 29.8.1. Help!

Flatten image is a Photoshop option.

To export as jpeg you can keep your layers as they are.

Thanks! You're right I was confusing Illustrator with Photoshop! If anyone knows how to fix not being able to right click for other purposes let me know 🙂

Unless I'm mistaken, Illustrator doesn't have right-click functions over items in the Layers panel. The functions in the Layers panel are pretty straightforward. What task are you trying to do in the Layers panel?

In almost all the tutorials I have seen, when you right click a layer you get options such as:

  • Rename Layer

  • Duplicate Layer

  • Delete Layer

  • Merge Selected

  • Flatten Artwork

When you right click on objects within a layer you get options such as:

  • Make Clipping Mask

  • Release Clipping Mask

  • Group / Ungroup

  • Arrange (bring to front/back, etc.)

  • Isolate Selected Path

To answer your question, what sparked this was the desire to create clipping masks. Please correct me if I'm wrong !!

Hi @youcef_8715,

Thanks so much for reaching out and sharing the details. I understand how frustrating this issue can be, and I've already started checking this with the product team on priority. I'll share an update with you as soon as I hear back from them.

In the meantime, if possible, could you please drop a short screen recording demonstrating the issue when trying to right-click on layers in the Layers panel? This will help us better understand the behavior and share accurate information with the team.

Looking forward to your update.

Hi Abishek, please let me know what they say. Not sure a screen recording would help as nothing happens on the screen when I try to right click??
