Help! New and cannot figure out what I am doing!!!

Please help! I have been woriking at this for HOURS! I am sure it is something easy. I have watched the tutorials ans just cannot figure this out. 

I open a new document in Illustrator, choose my size. Then, I choose the file I want to work with, in this case, an AI (SVG image). I want to turn it into a coloring page. It goes into it's own seperate window within the document that I am creating! I am not familiar with how this works. I don't know how to put it on the main artboard...I am used to opening right into a document (layers) like Photoshop years ago, if that tells you anything...lol! Should I just switch to Photoshop for these things?

 

Can somebody please tell me what I am missing, like I am a 4 year old?! Thanks!

Place an image (File > Place) if you want to add it to an open document.
