So, I created an object and reflected it around VERTICAL AXIS changes the width of the object as shown below.

If you want to see it and have a little more control over it, I'd recommend selecting it, going to Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform..., turn on the preview, make 1 copy, and move it horizontally. At this point, it's an effect, so if you want to move it more or manipulate it, go to Object > Expand Appearance.

It didn't just change the width. The object is considerably smaller. How exactly did you flip it?
