Help Using Patterns?

So i'm trying to paste the multiple designs on ~40 different color backgrounds to see what color tshirt i want to put it on.

I'm trying to use patterns to more quickly achieve this. I understood how to add a design to swatches and then how to use the pattern options to toggle the spacing I don't understand how to actually paste the pattern on top of the colors, when i click save or done at the top nothing happens.

Here's what it looks like

Can someone help tell me how to do this with patterns or if there's an easier way

    Quinn,

As I (mis)understand it, you can forget about patterns and use just one instance of the design (object/group/whatever) as follows:

    1) Place the design as desired on the top left colour background,

    2) Effect>Distort&Transform>Transform use a horizontal Move by the horizontal centre to centre distance and the copy number equalling the number of background columns less one,

    2) Effect>Distort&Transform>Transform use a vertical Move by the vertictal centre to centre distance and the copy number equalling the number of background rows less one.

Or you can use a (Static) Symbol and copy both ways.

Creating a pattern is  2 step process.

    1. Create it and make the swatch

    2. Apply the pattern to a shape.
