Help with creating a 3D letter

I am new to Illustrator and I need to create a 3D model of the letter S like the image below but I have no idea where to start with this and get it to look right. Any hints or tutorials that you can point to are extremely appreciated.

  1. Use the pen tool to draw a grid pattern like the one in the image below.


  2. Fill in with the live paint bucket tool.


  3. Remove any unnecessary parts.


  4. Set the background is complete.
