help with dividing objects below on a clipping mask or similar result

Currently I am trying to divide objects below to essentially use a set of lines I've created on a clipping mask as an eraser type tool to create a pattern using the negative space. The objects I am trying to divide over are made from a clipping mask

However I cannot use divide objects below, everytime I try to use this function I get-

"this filter cannot complete because multiple objects are selected"

any tips on how to work around this? Making the clipping mask a compound shape hasn't gone well because it is multiple colors 😞
