How can I create an object within a specific layer group?

I can create an object and move it within the layers panel to a specific layer group. I can create a new group from an object. I can add an object within a layer, but it is outside of the group and I have to then drag it inside the group. Is there a way to make a group, and then start building objects within it without dragging each object in the layers panel into the group?
