How can I overlay plate on top of existing vectors

I am fairly new to illustrator and use CS6.

I am using Illustrator to design vectors and svg patterns for my cnc milling machine.

I have been succesful in creating a background repeating pattern but now I want to have an oval nameplate in the middle where I can engrave a name. I do not want to have to edit all the background design to prevent it from being routed out by the machine and wonder how I can lay an ovel on the 2d design and have it automatically cut the lines in the vector background so that they do not get cut out.
