How can I prevent Path/Simplify starting before I can access the simlify options window?

How can I prevent the ‘Path/Simplify’ operation starting immediately, before I can access the Simplify options window? Every time I use ‘Path/Simpliify, I am unable to access the options window, because the Simpllify operation always starts immediately.

simplify starts immediately, but when you access the options and cancel immediately it undoes the initial simplification.

see image below. I started with 16 anchors.

after clicking on Path/Simplify, immediately goes down to 9 anchors. Click on the “gear” icon to bring up the options dialog (img 2) then immediately press Esc key or click Cancel to dismiss it. It goes back to 16 anchors.
