How can I preview blending modes in illustrator?

Surely one doesn't have to hit Enter to implement the blending in the drop down menu just to see what the blending layer would do, and then go back and click on the drop down menu again, key over to the next layer, and hit enter again? That is madly slow. What's the trick?
