Question

How can I stop AI from crashing when I open the layers, inside my OpenStreetMap PDF?

Hey guys!

I try to use AI for Site plans and analysis for my college. So I decided to use the free source platform OpenStreetMap for data, after I watched a couple videos on youtoube.

However, If I want to open the Layers in this OSM PDF, my Illustrator simlpy freezes and doesnt return back to functionality, unlike in the videos Ive seen.

Opening the same PDF’s layers in Inkscape works just fine, without any trouble.
But I want to use Illustrator thanks to its many options, but its hard when it crashes all the time :(

My Graphicscard is a RTX 4070TI And I have 32gb of ram, as well as enough space on my drives.

I am really out of any ideas on what to do. I could even try to send a screencapture video.

Thanks in advance, if anyone could help me!

Thank you, but i just noticed i sent a little part of the map i was about to use. Probably because of my frustration of those many attempts. drawing all would be pretty time consuming.

I will send a proper map once i am home.

Thank you for helping me though :)

You should really try and get an SVG file from OSM. Because then it will have structure and it will be easier to clean up. You could use that in Inkscape to delete complete layers.

You could also (in Inkscape) select paths that have a certain color (black = text) and delete them as well. You probably want to put new text into the map anyway.

The thing is, if I use SVG files, it does look like this.

I really have no clue why it aint working for me haha
This is the original map btw.

OSM maps can be very complex. Is it possible to clean it up in Inkscape before sending it to Illustrator? Or just generate a map that doesn’t have redundant information before exporting it from OSM?

Hey! Thank you for answering!
Yeah after some research now I noticed this too. I just wonder why some people can simply drag and drop those files though. But I am trying to figure it out using QGIS To get the Layers one by one and adding them. I gotta try it this afternoon on how much I can stress this out :)

But for Inkscape Id need to take another look, on how to possibly clean it up. I just downloaded it as well, since google told me that it could maybe be an solution.

Can you perhaps share that map?

When other people are doing it, perhaps they just have maps of very rural areas?
