How do I create an outline of this net in Illustrator?

I have to cut this net out using a laser cutter and the exterior lines need to have an outline in red with 0.001mm thickness. When I try to select the outside border it just selects the entire shape. The net was made in photoshop using the rectangle tool, polygon tool, and trapeziums were made with the line tool. I have tried to use the pen tool to create a border but it glitches and makes a triangle with a black fill (I had no fill). The net looks like this:

Thanks!

Are you sure the original was really made in Photoshop?

Just try to find the original, should be in vector, than you can edit and change that in Illustrator like you want.

Elizabeth,

If you have paths without gaps (you have closed paths), or if you can create them, maybe as suggested by Monika, you can select everything and Ctrl/Cmd+C+F to create a copy in front, then Pathfinder>Unite, which should give you the desired outline as a separate path which you can give the colour and stroke weight to be used for cutting.

Are those still shape layers in Photoshop?

In that case you could open the PSD file in Illustrator, convert Layers to objects and see if it turns them into paths.

If it doesn't work, you have to draw it in Illustrator using the same technique as in Photoshop. And if you ever have to draw something that needs to be cutted, use Illustrator, not Photoshop.
