How do I create these spirograph fan shapes on illustrator?

Hello,

I'm trying to recreate these two spirograph fan shapes on illustrator.

 

I've been playing around with the transform tools and then duplicating (cmd+d) until I complete the spiral, but I just can't figure out the initial shapes to create both these symbols.

 

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Does look like a combination of multiple initial shapes.

Instead of Transform Again, you may want to look at Transform Effect (Google: Transform Effect Illustrator)
