How do I delete content on a document that wasn't created in Illustrator?

I'm working on an event map and trying to update names that are listed on the map next to their location, but I don't know how to remove the existing words to replace them with new ones. Is this possible to do on this on Illustrator?

What does this mean? What was it done in? What are you opening? A PDF?

If it is still text, you can change it.

To check if it is live text, switch temporarely to Outline View (Ctrl Y or Cmd Y), If the text stays with a black fill it is live editable text. You may also check if it is locked (see the Layers panel).
