I'm doing this from memory and I'm not in front of my main computer to double-check it...

If I recall correctly, Illustrator basically treats points and pixels as the same dimension-wise. For example, a 900 points square document will export at 900 pixels square. If you export a raster image, such as PNG, at 300 ppi (not dpi; dpi is for printers), it will be 3 inches square.

Illustrator will add pixels your example will become 12,5 inch @ 300ppi

Only if you don't set the resolution upon export. 

(I'm not referring to Export for Screen/Web.)

Tip: work out the design size in inches or mm, make that the design size. Do NOT, repeat NOT work out the size in pixels and set that size in Illustrator.

DPI is defined in the document settings and the exporters honor this setting or have built-in overrides. I would suggest you actually read the online help on these basics.
