How do I import an older version of the settings file?

Every time I upgrade a large version (such as from 25.0 to 26.0), I must redo the Illustrator parameters, such as shortcut keys, color settings, workspace, and so on. If I try to import an old version of the settings file, it will prompt an error message as shown in the following figure. Is there any way to import the old version of the settings file? Or is there any other way to preserve the parameter settings and personal usage environment of the old version?

If the export/import route isn't working, have you tried just putting the old prefs file in the new versions pref location?

(I don't know if this works, I have no reason to try it to find out.)
