how do I keep the sizes of images in Photoshop and Illustrator the same?

Note: I asked this same question in the Photoshop  Forum, because I don't know which app is easier to adjust to take care of the problem.

I do a lot of drawings in Illustrator that are intended to be incorporated into Photoshop images, so I work directly over the PS files as templates, then export the AI parts to PS, get them aligned, and flatten the whole thing. Sometimes the process goes without a hitch, and sometimes, when I get back to Photoshop with the Illustrator section, the two parts will not be the right size for each other. I'll have to spend a long few minutes adjusting size and alignment to get the final image right. The problem usually crops up after I've installed a new version of the apps, or an old version on a new disk-which tells me that it's an incorrect setting in one or both of the apps. Can anyone tell me which settings control this match-versus-mismatch?

Sizes are derived based the relevant document and effect DPI settings and sizes. Really not much more than that. You are likely messing this up occasionally and/ or it sets itself to odd values if you e.g. import and rasterize artwork or mess with artboard sizes. To be fair, though, there have been a few issues for instance with text layers in PS incorrectly responding to your system's screen DPI setting and rtasterizing to wrong sizes, so some of that could be at play as well.
