How do I make an outline with different stroke widths?

I want to make this red outline across the green GTA V logo.

I would apply a stroke, create this shadow, and later smooth it. But how can I do this?

Use your white V as a base, duplicate it, colour the one below in the desired colour and move it a little.

You can also build up the whole thing with different contours in the Appearance panel. You can move it using the transform effect.
