How do I place SVG items from the Symbols tab in a custom size onto the artboard?

I tried to draw a rectangle with the mouse before releasing it while dragging the SVGs into the artboard from the Symbols tab, to indicate in which width or height I want it pasted (this works in InDesign with the mouse in "place" mode), but it doesn't work.
