How do I stop direct select tool from turning things into curves?

I'm not sure which update brought on this new behavior, but now when I use the direct select tool to grab a section of my artwork, instead of being able to grab it and move it, if I touch anything it turns everything into curved lines. How do I stop this? I cannot imagine why this bizarre behavior has become the default for using the direct select tool. If I'd wanted curved lines I'd have made them curved lines to begin with. I see no way to just select and move a selected group of handles without this conversion process taking over.
