How do I trim text outlines layered on each other?

I'd like to know how to trim text outlines, except that said text outlines have been overlayed over a shape with object > envelope distort > make with top object. I'd like to remove the parts of the outlines that are within another letter, for a layer effect. Any help would be useful!
