How Do I turn Multiple Objects Into One?

I'm new to Illustrator and I'm trying to recreate this logo as an exercise http://www.luthorville.com/images/luthorville.png

I'm having trouble figuring out how to turn multiple objects (including individual shapes and texts) into one so that I could apply a pinkish white stroke around the perimeter of the logo.

In Photoshop, you simply merge layers together but when I tried this in Illustrator I got a different result. Examples:

- The logo turns orange

- The logo turns white after applying a stroke

How do I turn multiple objects into one?

Thanks.

    Group it.

In the Appearance panel, add a new stroke.

Drag the stroke item below the Contents of the group and give it the desired thickness.

    Group all your objects.

    Open the appearance panel

Add a new stroke to the group

Move the stroke below the "Contents"

Apply color and weight to the stroke
