How Does Illustrator Determine Font Weight?

Does anyone know how Illustrator determines what fonts it classifies for various filtering choices? In the attached file,  you can see I've filtered for heavy weight fonts. Several fonts aren't heavy weight at all and a bunch of my go to chunky fonts aren't listed at all. I'm assuming Illustrator is reading something in the font file that determines that it's heavy weight, but I can't figure out what it is. Any ideas?

Okay, I think I figured it out. That menu is only showing the Adobe installed fonts and TTF files in the MacOS. It doesn't include installed OTF files.
