How to combine on IPad

I am looking to combine a set of anchors and patch design so thah the anchor is behind the patch.  I am looking to make it so that the middle of the anchor where it is behind the patch doesn't show through. 

    My patch is a compound path and if I release it, it goes all the way black.  I've tried to use shape builder w no luck and tried to place the patch on top of anchor and make both compound path but that didn't work.  

    So my question is what way should I approach it.  I know I can use erase tool and erase what's inside the area I want to hide but I hoped a better way to do it.  Attached is a video.
