How to create a single object from multiple object/line vectors?

I was wondering how one would create a single object vector from a combination of object and line vectors. For example, I made a word from this combination (cursive so the world contains object vectors for the letters and line vectors for the connections due to it being cursive) and am unable to use options such as pathfinder.

When using pathfinder, this is the failed result:

What would be the process of making this into one vector that can then be manipulated with outlines, color changes, etc...?

Try selecting all the stroke vectors and use Object>Path>Outline Stroke. Then try the Pathfinder>Union or the Shape Builder tool followed by Object>Compound Path>Make.

This works! The only thing to keep in mind is to make the line vectors longer and past where you would visibly see them "connect" to the letter object vectors! makes the end product more fluid!

As Larry recommended, take a look at the Shape Builder tool. Here's a couple of videos that should help:

Try first Object > Path > Outline Stroke before using Pathfinder Unite.

This works just as long as there aren't any overlapping figures! but still works!
