How to create Smudge Fonts effect in Illustrator?

Hello,

I am trying to create a logo and I want to try smudging some fonts.

How do I do this on Illustrator?

    Tom,

    How about removing the Fill from the live Type, then Appearance>Add New Fill with the desired colour, then us the desired Photoshop Effect?

    Or using/creating a background object with a smudge texture/appearance beneath the live Type, then select both and Ctrl/Cmd+7 to make a Clipping Mask?

    Can you please show examples? Might be as simple as applying the roughen effect, but might be more complex
