I want to create the same effect as the new kits of man utd:

    here's your basic shape. position them into the stylized 'm', use pathfinder unite and give it a gradient:

    position four of them together like so:

    here's outline mode so you can see the no stroke/fill box i'm using to define the pattern boundaries. its top and bottom are aligned to the centre of the shapes (use smart guides):

    drag all five shapes to the swatches palette and voila:

    I get white lines like this:

    You did not create the no fill/no stroke rectangle. Or you created it wrong.
