How to Delete Overhanging Scroll From Outline

Hello - I'm very new to Illustrator so please bear with me. I do scroll work and insert it into outlines. Most of the time there is an overhang that needs to be removed. How can I delete the overhang but keep the outline intact? Thank you in advance for your help!

Jason,

As I (mis)understand it, you can:

1) Select the outline, then Ctrl/Cmd+C+F+X+F (hold Ctrl/Cmd and press C then F then X then F) to copy it to the very front (in front of the scrolls;

2) Select all the scrolls along with the copy outline from 1) and Ctrl/Cmd+7 to create a clipping set with the outline as the Clipping Mask, to make the outlying parts of the scrolls invisible.

When starting new scroll work, you can also use Draw Inside.
